Dyropteris waobyium
D. waobyium is not a real fern name. It's my name for that wood fern you can't figure out. Waobyium is my Latin version of 'walk on by'.
I first heard the term 'walk on by' from James Merryweather of the British Pteridological Society in this video. Mr. Merryweather uses the term 'male fern' when referring to 'wood ferns', Dryopteris sp.
From the book "Ferns of Northeastern and Central North America" by Cobb/Farnsworth/Lowe (out of print), shows the following picture of the subtle differences between 3 species.

The picture is showing the lowest most pinna of each specie. One needs a mature specimen to see this detail!
D. intermedia has a shorter first lower pinna.
D. carthusiana has a longer first lower pinna.
D. campyloptera is missing the first lower pinna and the second lower pinna is significantly longer that the rest, along with the upper pinna being shorter than the rest of the upper pinna.
Thus, without a mature specimen to determine specie, just 'walk on by'.
