Field Horsetail, Equisetum arvense
E arvense is a very common horsetail in New England.
iNaturalist show that E arvense is found in most of the United States.

E arvense has both a fertile and a sterile plant. The fertile plant appears in spring and is gone by summer.
The fertile plant has a cone at the top of steam containing the spores. It is brown, leafless versus the fertile plant being green and having wiry leaves.

Green spores are seen in some cones.

The toothed sheath is black and very pointed.
The toothed sheath pattern and shape is a diagnostic for Equisetum species.
