Marginal Wood Fern

Marginal wood fern, Dryopteris marginalis, is found in many places in the Eastern and Southeastern United States, along the Appalachian Mountain range.

D. marginalis is a 'classic wood fern'. It has many brown scales on the stipe from the ground, continuing up the rachis.

Marginal wood fern gets its name from the sori appearing on the margins of the pinna.

The sori can be single or in rows.
